My Adventures in Writing a Synopsis – The Prologue

What the hell is a synopsis?

This was the question I was asking myself after I made the decision to submit my book to a publisher. I was a self-published author. I never had to convince myself to publish my book. I always knew I would. Submitting to a publisher is a whole new ballgame, with a new set of rules. I’m terrified, but I’m going to do it.

At first, I was surprised how easy the submission process was…until I got to the dreaded synopsis. A three to five page synopsis that describes your book in detail, including plot line, character development, and story/conflict resolution. This is NOT your book jacket summary.

I sat staring at this summation for a few minutes, sweating. To someone on the outside looking in, this might seem easy. Sum up the book, the plot, the characters, and how it ends. BOOM! DONE! But, I didn’t have a clue where to begin.

So, I turned to my old friend, Google. There’s a ton of information about writing a synopsis online, of course, some of it good, a lot of it mediocre, and a chunk of it wants you to pay for the right to see how you too can write a synopsis that will sell your book, GUARANTEED. Um, yeah, no thanks.

I did find a couple of good articles, that gave me some really good tips. So, this week, a vacation week for me, I will be working on my synopsis. I thought I’d share my adventures in synopsis writing with you, my loyal readers. It should prove to be interesting.
